China Sales Head

The Mission

The South China Morning Post (SCMP) is seeking a world-class sales leader to spearhead our expansion within Mainland China. You won't just be managing accounts; you will be the bridge between complex Chinese regulatory landscapes and global commercial success.

We need a leader who is fluent in the language of Chinese bureaucracy but possesses the relentless "hunter" instinct required to drive significant revenue growth in a competitive media environment.

Purpose of the Position:

The primary purpose of this role is to identify and cultivate business opportunities and partnerships that contribute to our global growth strategy, with a particular emphasis on expanding our presence in the Chinese market. The successful candidate will report to the Chief Development Officer and serve as a solutions-oriented leader to the China Sales team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the Charge: Direct and manage the Mainland China Sales team to exceed aggressive growth targets and support SCMP’s overall sales evolution in the region.
  • Commercial Diplomacy: Act as the primary brand ambassador, navigating relationships with Chinese SOEs, government stakeholders, and private tech giants with sophistication and nuance.
  • Revenue Hustle: Proactively identify, hunt and close high-value revenue opportunities, moving with the speed and agility required for this market.
  • Strategic Translation: Understand the complex KPIs and expansion goals of Chinese clients, translating them into tailored marketing solutions from the SCMP portfolio.
  • Market Intelligence: Stay ahead of the curve on Chinese policy shifts and industry trends to identify emerging windows for partnership before the competition.
  • Cross-Border Collaboration: Work closely with the Hong Kong-based Sales Team and report directly to the Chief Development Officer to ensure Mainland strategies align with global growth.

Skills and Experience that will lead to success:

  • You have a 15+ year track record of driving significant revenue increases in sales/BD roles.
  • Strong understanding of the dynamics and regulatory environment of the Chinese market, with experience in the relevant industry.
  • Knowledgeable in the expansion strategies needed by Chinese companies globally and a well-established network within the Chinese business landscape.
  • You have an existing network of senior executives and business leaders across China.
  • You understand the "why" behind Chinese regulatory shifts and how they impact business.
  • Experience working with senior executives across a diverse organization in China, fostering collaboration and strategic alignment.
  • Strong planning and organizational capabilities, with a capacity to work effectively under pressure.
  • You have spoken and written mastery of Mandarin and English (Cantonese is a plus).

The main working location will be at the Hong Kong office.
