About Co-Star

Someone downloads Co–Star every 5 seconds.

In the five years since we launched, 25% of young people 18-25 in the US have downloaded the app. Big Sean has rapped about us, Ariana Grande & Kevin Durant post screenshots to their IGs, and we’ve been App of the Day twice. We’ve been featured in the New York Times three times, this year on the cover of NYT Style. We have a global following, in 193 countries – missing just North Korea and Eritrea.

We don't pay for marketing – we designed the app to go viral, and it did.

Astrology has been popular for 4,000 years.

Astrology is a tool for speaking about yourself, about who you are, what you’re experiencing, and how you relate to other people – in other words, a language for the things that really matter. It’s a structured system, based on the physical locations of the planets in the sky, developed over millennia 4,000 years of practice.

Everyone has memories of reading a horoscope in the newspaper. You know your sign the same way you know the name of the street you grew up on. An average of 43% of Americans have believed in astrology since the 1970s.

We’re merging the resonance of the humanities with the precision of technology.

Co-Star uses real-time NASA data and AI to bring this practice to the modern age. Every day, Co–Star generates millions of hyper-personalized horoscopes – a scale never previously possible. Every word of it is based on each person’s unique astrology: where the stars physically were when they were born and where those same stars are now. Co–Star combines the art of ancient practice with cutting-edge artificial intelligence, creating the first synthetic text to be called “wildly beautiful.”

We’re a small, experienced team.

Co-Star is a team of 30, with experience in big tech (Amazon, Google, Snapchat), entertainment (Frank Ocean, Adult Swim), and academia (Harvard, Stanford, NYU, Columbia).

About the brand designer role

We're looking for a talented visual designer to shape how Co-Star shows up outside of the app, in the broader world. We are looking for someone with a fresh, opinionated, and high-quality design foundation who can create work that feels distinct, not what’s now but what’s next.

You'll partner closely with the leadership on campaigns and visual storytelling across earned and owned channels. This is a freelance engagement with potential for a long-term partnership as the work (and team) grows.

What you'll do

  • Design campaign visuals: ads, social, launches — from concept through finished assets
  • Bring editorial design sensibility to our owned channels: email/welcome series, blog, campaign imagery
  • Develop visual systems that are expressive rather than corporate
  • Partner with marketing on what earned and owned should look and feel like
  • Collaborate async with a small, fast-moving team

You might be a fit if

  • You're a senior IC — roughly 5–8 years in — with a portfolio of expressive, culturally fluent graphic design: editorial, campaigns, identities across print and digital
  • Typography and composition are your first language
  • You can direct as well as execute: you've shaped campaigns, not just produced assets for them
  • You're plugged into visual culture across art, fashion, publishing, music, and the internet
  • You work well remotely and independently

Nice to have

  • Editorial/publication experience (print or digital magazines)
  • Motion or illustration
  • You already make things with generative tools

Logistics

  • Freelance/contract, part-time to start, with room to grow
  • Fully remote, anywhere. No travel required (though you're always welcome in NYC)
