Te Whiwhinga Mahi | The opportunity

We are seeking a Lecturer in Communication to contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, supervision of sub-doctoral and PhD students, and to undertake high quality and impactful research. We particularly welcome and encourage applications from communication scholars with expertise in Māori and/or Pacific epistemologies and pedagogies, cross-cultural communication, political communication as well as those with existing research and/or teaching relationships with community, public sector and/or industry organisations.

This position offers the opportunity to build your academic career within a growing and successful Communication programme. The University of Auckland offers Communication within a specialist Bachelor of Communication, as a major within the Bachelor of Arts, and in Masters and PhD programmes.

Researchers and educators in Communication have expertise spanning new media and communication technologies, Indigenous data sovereignty and governance, cultural labour, feminist media studies, social media and digital environments, journalism studies, social change, computational media, technology ethics, gig work and digital and platform economies. The successful candidate will have teaching and/or research expertise that adds to or extends the current strengths of the Communication programme.

The successful candidate will be familiar with or open to learning about Te Tiriti o Waitangi (the Treaty of Waitangi) and be prepared to build or extend relationships with Māori and Pacific communities in Aotearoa New Zealand.

The workload allocation for this position is 40% teaching, 40% research, and 20% service.

This is a full-time (40 hours per week), permanent role (subject to continuation).
The remuneration range is Lecturer step 1 - $99,788 to Lecturer step 7 - $119,204, depending on qualifications and experience.

Preferred start date of 1 March 2027.
