Who this fits

You’ll suit a senior marketing leader who can own an established function while modernizing it with disciplined AI use. The role works closely with the CEO, business development, sales, operational staff, agencies, and freelancers. It is based onsite in San Diego, with some conference-related travel required.

From the employer

Sapient Bioanalytics is a multi-omics discovery partner and advanced contract research organization headquartered in San Diego, California. The Company provides large-scale proteomics, metabolomics, and lipidomics services that enable pharmaceutical and biotechnology clients to characterize the biological mechanisms underlying disease and drug response across the full arc of drug development, from early discovery through clinical assays. Sapient maintains a lean organizational structure of fewer than fifty employees and has established a market reputation for scientific rigor and innovation that exceeds what its size would typically command.

Position Summary

The Director of Marketing is responsible for the strategic direction and operational execution of Sapient’s marketing function, including brand positioning, demand generation, voice-of-customer programs, and conference and event strategy. This position reports directly to the Chief Executive Officer and serves as a strategic partner to the Company’s business development and commercial leadership. The Company’s existing marketing foundation, including its search engine optimization, social media, and paid advertising programs, is well established and grounded in defined performance benchmarks; the Director of Marketing is expected to own this strategy end to end and to build on it, rather than construct a new function from the ground up.

A central mandate of this role is to lead the modernization of Sapient’s marketing operations through the disciplined adoption of artificial intelligence tools and workflows, so that the marketing function operates at scale while preserving the judgment, quality control, and strategic oversight that automation alone cannot provide.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Strategic Marketing Leadership

  1. Develop and execute the Company’s overall marketing strategy in alignment with corporate growth objectives and its positioning within the multi-omics and life sciences services markets.
  1. Serve as principal steward of the Company’s brand and market positioning, ensuring consistency across all internal and external communications.
  1. Act as a strategic advisor to the Chief Executive Officer and business development leadership on matters of market perception, competitive positioning, and go-to-market strategy.

AI-Enabled Marketing Transformation

  1. Lead the evaluation, selection, and implementation of artificial intelligence tools and platforms across content development, search engine optimization, campaign analytics, and lead scoring.
  1. Establish governance standards for AI-assisted content production that safeguard search engine performance and brand voice, including review protocols to ensure published materials do not read as machine-generated.
  1. Partner with the Company’s systems and AI function to align marketing technology initiatives with the organization’s broader data and automation strategy, ensuring marketing operations are integrated with, rather than parallel to, enterprise-wide AI initiatives.
  1. Apply AI-driven analysis to voice-of-customer data, inbound lead qualification, and campaign performance measurement in order to extend the effective capacity of a lean marketing function.
  1. Maintain sufficient working knowledge of emerging marketing technologies to make informed build, buy, and outsource decisions.

Demand Generation and Voice of Customer

  1. Own end-to-end accountability for inbound marketing performance, including search engine optimization, content marketing, and paid digital advertising programs.
  1. Direct the Company’s voice-of-customer program, ensuring market feedback is systematically captured, analyzed, and communicated to executive leadership and other relevant stakeholders.
  1. Oversee paid media programs, including existing LinkedIn and Google advertising campaigns, and evaluate opportunities for expansion.

Conference and Event Strategy

  1. Establish the Company’s annual conference and event strategy, including selection criteria, target audience definition, and messaging, in coordination with business development leadership.
  1. Define and monitor return-on-investment benchmarks for conference participation, consistent with the Company’s existing standards of no fewer than twenty qualified meetings per conference and no fewer than fifty qualified meetings at major industry conferences.
  1. Provide strategic direction to operational staff responsible for conference logistics and outreach execution.

Vendor and Agency Management

  1. Select, engage, and manage external agencies and freelance resources for content production, graphic design, and related creative services.
  1. Establish and monitor service-level expectations, budgets, and contractual terms with all external marketing vendors.

Cross-Functional Partnership

  1. Maintain a close working relationship with business development and sales leadership to ensure marketing strategy directly supports commercial objectives.
  1. Coordinate with operational staff supporting conference execution and inbound lead follow-up to ensure alignment between marketing strategy and field execution.
  1. Maintain ownership of an assigned workstream within the Company’s ongoing Commercial Transformation initiative.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Communications, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • Experience within life sciences, diagnostics, contract research, or an adjacent regulated industry.
  • A minimum of eight years of progressive marketing experience, including demonstrated experience developing and executing marketing strategy, not solely executing programs designed by others.
  • Demonstrated experience implementing artificial intelligence tools within a marketing function, including content generation, campaign analytics, or lead scoring applications.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage external agencies and freelance resources in lieu of a large internal team.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with demonstrated ability to partner effectively with executive leadership and sales or business development functions.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Base Salary: $155,000 to $185,000, commensurate with experience.
  • Standard Company benefits, as provided to similarly situated employees.

Work Environment

This position is based onsite at the Company’s San Diego, California headquarters. Some travel may be required to support conference attendance and related business development activities.
