Director, Marketing & Communications Strategy 

Proto is looking for a Director to help define and build our emerging Go-To-Market practice. We're seeking a marketing and media strategist who can translate growth, product, and experience strategy into market success. You'll work alongside business leaders to identify growth opportunities and help marketing organizations accelerate adoption, strengthen market positioning, and drive sustainable revenue.

With this new practice, you will be responsible for setting strategic direction, forecasting shifting category dynamics, and helping establish Proto’s unique approach to marketing strategy.

At Proto, Directors are trusted advisors to senior leaders, bringing foresight, clarity, and confidence to high-stakes decisions. Equally, they are team leaders that orient multidisciplinary groups around market realities, elevate the contributions of others, and ensure narratives and recommendations are sharp, creative, and influential.

What you will do:

  • Define and drive GTM strategy at both product and portfolio levels, ensuring plans align with client business goals, revenue targets, and long-term objectives;
  • Collaborate with innovation, commercial and experience teams to define the target audience and determine where and how to best engage with them; 
  • Guide investment recommendations in key markets spend areas (media, partnerships, etc.) 
  • Define success metrics and provide guidance around tracking KPIs, performance benchmarking, and ROI to optimize marketing performance;
  • Orchestrate cross-functional execution, collaborating with sales, product, marketing, and customer success to ensure GTM alignment and impact;
  • Serve as a trusted client partner and strengthen relationships by anticipating risks, clarifying strategic requirements, managing expectations, guiding them through organizational complexities;
  • Navigate the challenges of launching new products and services, and oversee the strategic planning and coordination across executional partners to ensure a successful launch and ongoing market activation;
  • Map communications, messaging and activations across markets, cohorts, and channels; 
  • Contribute to business growth, shaping proposals, POVs, and pitches, and serving as a visible strategic voice in new business conversations.

Qualifications

  • 8+ years of client side or consulting experience in marketing strategy, especially related to market entry and/or repositioning;
  • Understanding of the media and marketing landscapes, with the ability to set benchmarks expectations for spend and return;
  • Proven track record of designing and executing go-to-market strategies for products, services, or business units;
  • Experience guiding senior level clients and C-suite leaders;
  • Thrives working in ambiguity with tight timelines;
  • Willing to travel up to 30% for client meetings.

In New York City, the base salary for this position is $160-180K. Individual compensation varies based on job-related factors including years of relevant skills and experience, level of responsibility, and qualifications. This position reports into our Chief Strategy Officer.
