Overview

The Sales Engineer II independently supports technical engagements for mid-market clients throughout the customer lifecycle: pre-sales and post. This role partners closely with Sales Executives and Account Managers to understand customer environments, conduct technical discovery, design cloud solutions that align with business objectives, and coach prospects and customers to the best solutions for their situation.

Sales Engineers are expected to operate with increasing autonomy, delivering tailored demonstrations, assisting with solution architecture, and supporting complex customer conversations. The role also contributes to internal enablement, process improvement, and knowledge sharing across the technical sales organization.

Compensation: The compensation range for this role is between $150k-$175k OTE with a 75/25 base to commission split

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary technical resource for customer engagements during the pre- and post-sales cycle, partnering with Account Executives and Account Managers to support solution positioning.
  • Conduct detailed technical discovery sessions to understand client environments, infrastructure challenges, and business requirements.
  • Design and position cloud infrastructure solutions aligned with customer technical and operational goals.
  • Deliver customized product demonstrations, workshops, and scenario-based presentations.
  • Guide prospects and customers through a structured decision-making process, especially when navigating multiple options or internal stakeholders.
  • Support development of Proof of Concepts (POCs) that demonstrate the value of the Digital Cloud solutions.
  • Assist with designing hybrid digital hosting solutions to meet client environments and needs.
  • Collaborate with Sales, Product, Implementation, and Customer Success teams to ensure accurate solution positioning and smooth transition to delivery teams.
  • Contribute to technical proposals and customer-facing solution documentation.
  • Capture customer feedback, technical requirements, and competitive insights to help inform product and service improvements.
  • Support client enablement through architecture discussions, technical workshops, and knowledge transfer sessions.
  • Share knowledge and provide informal guidance to junior Sales Engineers and sales team members.
  • Contribute to improvements in demo environments, internal tools, and sales workflows.
  • Maintain current knowledge of emerging cloud technologies, infrastructure trends, and competitive solutions.
  • Work in lockstep with product and engineering, providing feedback, insight, and guidance for product improvements and enhancements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 3+ years of experience in pre-sales engineering, solutions engineering, technical support, or a related technical role — ideally within web hosting, ecommerce platforms, or the WordPress/CMS ecosystem.
  • Strong understanding of WordPress architecture and the managed hosting stack: web server/PHP-FPM, MySQL/MariaDB, caching layers, CDN, and DNS fundamentals.
  • Hands-on familiarity with ecommerce platforms — WooCommerce, Magento/Adobe Commerce, Shopware — including performance tuning, PCI considerations, and scaling for high-traffic events (e.g., BFCM).
  • Familiarity with vertical WordPress applications such as LMS/education tools (LearnDash), donation/nonprofit platforms (GiveWP), event management (The Events Calendar), and page builders/theme frameworks (Kadence, Elementor).
  • Understanding of site performance and reliability practices: autoscaling, staging environments, backups, and page-speed/Core Web Vitals optimization.
  • Familiarity with web application security fundamentals: WAF, bot mitigation, SSL/TLS, and basic compliance considerations (PCI-DSS for commerce customers).
  • Comfort evaluating and scoping site migrations from other hosts (cPanel-based hosts, competitor managed WordPress platforms, etc.).
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, with particular strength translating technical concepts for non-technical, small-business decision-makers — often the actual buyer for this segment, not an enterprise IT department.
  • Exposure to AI-powered website building/optimization tools is a strong plus, given Digital Cloud's platform roadmap.
  • Relevant WordPress, ecommerce platform (e.g., Adobe Commerce Developer), or hosting certifications are preferred but not required.
  • General cloud/virtualization familiarity (VPS, dedicated, cloud tiers) is a plus for understanding the infrastructure underneath; deep orchestration/IaC expertise (Kubernetes, Terraform) is not required for this role.
