The Role…

As the Deputy Director of Video, you will help shape the next chapter of video at Hearst UK, developing ambitious YouTube shows and repeatable formats that build audiences across some of the UK’s most recognisable media brands.

Working closely with the Director of Video, you’ll help define and deliver the department’s slate of shows — from the first spark of an idea through development, pilots and launch. You’ll executive produce a range of shows, working closely with producers to make the work as strong as possible, while also taking direct ownership of a limited number of productions yourself.

This is a genuinely hands-on leadership role. Alongside the creative work, you’ll help run the engine room of the video team, establishing clear and effective ways of working across budgets, planning, production and delivery. As deputy to the Director of Video, you’ll provide creative leadership, make decisions, unblock challenges and help the team deliver at pace.

You’ll work across a portfolio of iconic Hearst brands, collaborating with senior stakeholders, producers, editors, journalists, presenters and talent to create video that audiences actively choose to watch — and come back to.

Hearst UK operates a hybrid working policy, with colleagues expected to work from the House of Hearst in London four days per week.

Main Duties…

  • Deputise for the Director of Video, providing creative leadership, decision-making support and day-to-day direction for the video team.
  • Develop and shape the department’s slate of YouTube shows, taking ideas from audience proposition and initial concept through format development, pilots and launch.
  • Executive produce a range of shows, working closely with producers to strengthen formats, editorial approaches and episode ideas, while reviewing scripts, briefs, production plans and edits.
  • Provide clear creative and editorial direction, helping producers solve challenges, make decisions and deliver high-quality work on time and to budget.
  • Produce a limited number of shows directly, taking ownership of format development, talent, production planning, shoot arrangements and directing filming.
  • Work with senior stakeholders across multiple brands, confidently presenting ideas, challenging where needed and standing behind strong editorial and creative judgement.
  • Own the operating rhythm of the video team, establishing clear processes for budgeting, production planning, task tracking and delivery — and making sure these are consistently followed.
  • Help the team prioritise competing demands across brands, identify potential issues early and keep productions moving through to delivery.
  • Use audience data, YouTube performance and wider insights to shape new formats and continually improve existing shows.
  • Build strong relationships across Hearst and develop a trusted pool of freelance producers, directors, editors, crew and other video specialists.

What We Are Looking For…

  • Significant experience in video production, with a strong track record of developing and delivering successful YouTube shows and formats.
  • Proven experience taking repeatable show concepts from the initial idea through development, production and launch.
  • Experience executive producing or overseeing other producers’ work, with the confidence to give clear, constructive creative and editorial direction.
  • Strong hands-on production experience, including shoot planning, working with talent and directing filming.
  • A deep understanding of YouTube audiences, platform behaviour and what makes a show compelling, repeatable and capable of growing an audience.
  • Excellent editorial judgement, storytelling instincts and a strong eye for detail, with the ability to know when an idea, format or piece of content needs pushing further.
  • Confidence working with senior stakeholders across multiple brands, presenting recommendations clearly and standing behind your professional judgement.
  • Strong organisational and operational skills, with experience managing budgets, schedules, production trackers and delivery processes.
  • The ability to bring structure to a busy creative team, set clear expectations and establish practical ways of working without slowing people down.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to build trust across producers, editors, journalists, presenters, talent and wider teams.
