Chief Marketing Officer

We are seeking an exceptional Chief Marketing Officer to build and lead the next generation of our marketing organization.

The CMO will have responsibility for both the enterprise brand and the property-level marketing organization, creating a rare opportunity to influence how the company is perceived by clients, prospective clients, residents, employees, prospective employees, industry partners, investors, and the broader marketplace.

The successful candidate will inherit a company whose operational scale, capabilities, and market position exceed the current awareness and perception of its brand. The mandate is to close that gap.

The CMO will establish a unified national brand, materially strengthen the company's position with institutional-quality clients, create a sophisticated inbound demand-generation engine, professionalize communications and reputation management, and build a modern, technology-enabled marketing organization that can demonstrate measurable financial returns.

This executive must be equally capable of operating at two levels:

  • Strategic executive: a senior leader who can help shape enterprise strategy, growth priorities, capital allocation, culture, reputation, and market positioning.
  • Hands-on builder: an operator willing to personally engage in messaging, campaigns, analytics, technology, events, organizational design, and problem solving while building the leadership team and infrastructure required for the company's next stage of growth.

The CMO will oversee approximately six corporate marketing professionals and a property marketing organization approaching 100 professionals, with responsibility spanning corporate marketing, property marketing, communications, public relations, digital, content, events, marketing operations, analytics, creative, and brand.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Enterprise Marketing Strategy

    • Develop and execute a comprehensive enterprise marketing strategy aligned with the company's growth objectives, operating strategy, client segmentation, and long-term vision
    • Serve as the executive leadership team's principal advisor on brand, market positioning, reputation, communications, customer perception, and marketing strategy

    Brand Strategy and Market Positioning

    • Establish and protect a clear, differentiated national brand architecture where every business line, market, department, executive, and marketing channel communicates a consistent brand story
    • Define the company's positioning, value proposition, messaging hierarchy, brand standards, visual identity, tone of voice, and enterprise narrative

Demand Generation and Partnership with Business Development

    • Build a marketing engine that generates qualified inbound opportunities and improves the productivity of outbound business development
    • Develop content, campaigns, executive visibility, thought leadership, digital strategies, account-based marketing initiatives, and outreach programs that support defined client segments and growth priorities

Digital Search, AI, and Marketing Technology

    • Lead a comprehensive modernization of the company's digital marketing capabilities, including the continued evolution of the company's corporate website
    • Develop a modern search strategy encompassing technical SEO, content SEO, local and national search visibility, Generative Engine Optimization, AI answer-engine visibility, LLM discoverability, structured content architecture, and digital authority development

    Corporate Communications and Public Relations

    • Develop and lead professional corporate communications and public relations function with a proactive media and communications strategy that increases the company's visibility and strengthens its reputation
    • Establish a consistent cadence of press releases, corporate announcements, executive commentary, media engagement, industry perspectives, research and insights, client success stories, awards and recognition, and thought leadership

    Events and Industry Presence

    • Develop a comprehensive national events strategy with a consistent and distinctive company presence across conferences and industry gatherings
    • Oversee customer conferences, executive events, client experiences, sponsorships, trade shows, and other strategic gatherings

    Property Marketing

    • Provide executive leadership to the property marketing organization and create a best-in-class client experience
    • Develop scalable standards, technologies, processes, analytics, and operating models that improve property-level marketing effectiveness while allowing appropriate customization at the asset level

    Employer Brand and Culture

    • Partner closely with the Chief People Officer and senior leadership to strengthen the company's internal brand and employer value proposition that improve recruiting, employee engagement, executive visibility, and organizational pride

    Social Media and Content

    • Create a deliberate enterprise social-media strategy tied to defined audiences and business objectives
    • Establish standards for corporate, executive, recruiting, property, and business-line social media

    Marketing Analytics and Financial Discipline

    • Establish a rigorous performance-management system for marketing via dashboards and KPIs that connect marketing activity to business outcomes
    • Establish an annual marketing budget tied to strategic priorities and measurable expected returns

This position entails travel, estimated at 5% of work time annually. Travel may be required for conferences, training sessions, or other business-related activities.

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing, Business, or related discipline
  • Significant progressive leadership experience in sophisticated marketing organizations.
  • Experience serving as a Chief Marketing Officer, EVP Marketing, SVP Marketing, or comparable senior marketing executive
  • Experience operating within a large-scale organization and managing leaders who themselves manage teams
  • Experience building, rebuilding, or materially transforming a marketing organization rather than solely inheriting a mature function
  • Demonstrated success operating in a high-growth environment
  • Meaningful experience with both B2B and B2C marketing
  • Experience marketing a service-based business with multiple constituencies and complex customer journeys
  • Demonstrated ability to connect marketing activity to commercial and financial outcomes

  • Demonstrated success improving brand awareness and market positioning
  • Experience building or directing sophisticated communications, PR, digital, content, events, analytics, and brand programs
  • Experience leading leaders and developing high-performing teams
  • Experience within property management, residential real estate, multifamily, student housing, senior housing, affordable housing, hospitality, or another adjacent industry is strongly preferred but not required
    • Experience within a Top 10 property management organization or another large-scale, distributed service organization would be particularly attractive
    • Direct property management experience will accelerate the successful candidate's learning curve, but it will not substitute for exceptional marketing capability
