The Communications and Knowledge Management Intern, working with the Customer Energy and Transportation Solutions (CETS) Planning and Performance team, will support departmental communications and knowledge management efforts. This role offers the opportunity to blend communications, technology, and business process improvement. The intern will help create and maintain content for SharePoint, develop communication materials, support employee engagement initiatives and assist with the organization and governance of knowledge assets. The intern will also have opportunities to explore emerging AI technologies, including Microsoft Copilot and help identify ways AI can improve employee productivity and customer experiences.
Key project work may include:
Developing and editing communications for employees and stakeholders
Supporting SharePoint site design, content organization, and user experience improvements
Assisting with knowledge management initiatives, including content inventories, metadata tagging, and governance activities
Creating job aids, newsletters, presentations, and other communication materials
Supporting AI and automation initiatives that improve knowledge sharing and information access
Collecting and analyzing usage metrics to help improve communication and knowledge management effectiveness
Support employee engagement and change management activities by coordinating events and meetings, developing communications, creating presentation materials, and post-event follow-up activities.
The intern will work closely with cross-functional teams across Customer Energy & Transportation Solutions (CETS), collaborating with leaders, subject matter experts, communicators, and technology partners to support clean energy programs and customer-focused initiatives.
Typical intern responsibilities may include but are not limited to:
Develop and edit employee and stakeholder communications, including newsletters, emails and intranet content.
Support the creation, organization and maintenance of content within the CETS SharePoint site.
Research, test and support emerging AI tools and capabilities, including Microsoft Copilot and other productivity solutions.
Participate in cross-functional project teams, providing communications and knowledge management support for priority business initiatives.
Identify opportunities to streamline workflows and improve information sharing through automation and digital tools.
This position is for a May 24, 2027 start date. This position may have the possibility to extend beyond the internship’s initial term based on the candidate’s successful performance and Xcel Energy’s business needs.
Minimum Requirements:
Current student, Junior or higher
Enrolled in an accredited college or university and pursuing a degree in Communications, Strategic Communication, Technical Communication, Business Administration, Digital Media or Digital Communications, Knowledge Management, Library and Information Science, Organizational Communication
Able to work full-time during the summer (up to 40 hours a week) and commuting to the designated work location in-person, per our hybrid work policy.
Preferred Qualifications:
Students with coursework or experience in strategic communications, content management, SharePoint, artificial intelligence (AI), knowledge management, digital workplace technologies, user experience, or data analytics are strongly encouraged to apply
Experience creating and maintaining digital content, newsletters, and SharePoint sites.
Coursework or experience related to knowledge management, information architecture, AI, data analytics, or user experience.
Familiarity with content management, metadata, records management, or information governance concepts.
Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to create clear, concise, and engaging content.
Experience with or demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Teams.
Ability to organize information, manage multiple priorities, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
Strong attention to detail.
Strong interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.
