Position Overview:

The Associate Director, Business Development & Corporate Strategy is a deal leader at PharmaEssentia, accountable for driving priority business development transactions from asset screening through term sheet to signing while contributing to enterprise and portfolio strategy. Working in close partnership with the Director, Corporate Strategy & Business Development, you will own your deals and workstreams end to end: leading counterparty discussions, orchestrating internal alignment across Legal, IP, Finance, R&D, Clinical, and other cross-functional teams, and bringing clear recommendations to senior leadership. The ideal candidate brings hands-on biopharma BD transaction experience, sound judgment, and the drive to build deal capabilities in a fast-growing, globally integrated company. This role offers high visibility with senior leadership and a real opportunity to shape how PharmaEssentia does deals.

Key Responsibilities:

Deal Leadership & Workstream Ownership
  • Lead priority BD transactions end to end, from initial term sheet through negotiation, definitive agreements, and signing, owning the timelines, decision points, and deliverables for each deal.
  • Orchestrate internal alignment across Legal, IP, Finance, R&D, Clinical, Regulatory, and headquarters in Taiwan, securing the input and approvals needed before external commitments are made.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for counterparties, outside counsel, and advisors, ensuring external communications are consistent with internal positions.
  • Take full ownership of your deal workstreams, strategic and operational alike, so that nothing falls through the cracks.
  • Maintain rigorous deal documentation, trackers, and correspondence in shared systems, enabling seamless collaboration and continuity across the team.
Ownership & Ways of Working
  • Operate with a high degree of autonomy: resolve day-to-day issues independently and bring well-structured recommendations, not just questions, to the Director.
  • Exercise sound judgment on escalation, surfacing material risks, trade-offs, and resourcing needs early so there are no surprises.
  • Partner with the Director, who sets priorities, provides oversight on key decisions, and leads senior stakeholder management, while you drive day-to-day execution.
Strategic Project Leadership
  • Independently lead high-impact enterprise and therapeutic-area strategy projects, including framing problem statements, structuring analyses, managing workstreams, and delivering recommendations to senior leadership.
  • Drive cross-functional strategic initiatives spanning R&D, Commercial, Medical, BD, Regulatory, and Finance.
  • Own project timelines, stakeholder engagement, and output quality, ensuring projects advance on schedule and deliver clear strategic value.
Portfolio Governance & Strategic Planning
  • Lead PharmaEssentia’s portfolio review process, including meeting design, agenda setting, data synthesis, and preparation of executive/Board-level materials.
  • Ensure portfolio decisions are aligned with corporate strategy, capital allocation priorities, and long-range plans.
  • Maintain a comprehensive, strategic perspective across all programs, identifying risks, opportunities, and cross-asset implications.
  • Maintain and evolve portfolio dashboards, KPIs, and decision-support tools enabling senior leaders to monitor performance and make informed choices.
Business Development & Commercial Due Diligence
  • Conduct commercial due diligence on target assets, including market sizing, competitive landscape assessment, unmet need analysis, and clinical differentiation evaluation.
  • Engage directly with target company management teams and C-suites to assess organizational capabilities, pipeline depth, and strategic fit.
  • Conduct financial assessment, including scenario modeling, P&L forecasting, rNPV building, clinical/market inflection tracking, and value-based prioritization.
  • Synthesize insights into clear, concise executive summaries and presentations.
  • Evaluate deal structures and transaction economics, including licensing terms (milestone/royalty structures, upfront vs. contingent payments), option deal mechanics, and co-development/co-commercialization arrangements; pressure-test term sheets and provide recommendations on deal design.
  • Manage external diligence processes, including coordinating with outside advisors, KOL consultants, and legal counsel on deal terms; maintain relationships with investment bankers and BD intermediaries.
  • Proactively source and screen BD targets by maintaining a target landscape, running screening criteria against strategic priorities, and surfacing opportunities for leadership review using databases and industry intelligence.

Cross-Functional Collaboration & Influence
  • Collaborate closely with R&D, Clinical, Commercial, Medical, and BD stakeholders to gather insights, pressure test assumptions, and ensure cross-functional alignment.
  • Act as a strategic integrator—connecting scientific, clinical, and commercial viewpoints to shape cohesive strategic recommendations.
  • Serve as a trusted thought partner and right hand to the Director and Head of Strategy on high-priority initiatives.
Executive Communication & Deliverables
  • Produce high-quality, executive-ready PowerPoint materials, including strategic frameworks, narratives, investment cases, and portfolio updates.
  • Draft memos, analyses, and communication materials used by the CEO, Executive Team, and Board.
  • Ensure clarity, accuracy, and compelling storytelling in all deliverables.
Qualifications & Experience:
  • Advanced degree strongly preferred (PhD, MD, PharmD, JD).
  • 5+ years total experience of of hands-on biopharma business development, with in-licensing or partnering transactions personally taken from term sheet through signing.
  • Strong understanding of drug development, clinical evidence, market access, and commercial dynamics—preferably in hematology, oncology, or immunology.
  • Demonstrated experience orchestrating cross-functional deal processes with legal, IP, finance, and R&D/clinical stakeholders, in addition to leading external negotiations.
  • Exceptional analytical skills, including financial/market modeling, forecasting, and competitive assessments.
  • Advanced PowerPoint and Excel mastery with demonstrated ability to produce polished executive presentations.
  • Strong communication, facilitation, and influence skills with ability to deliver clear recommendations to senior leaders.
  • Thrives in a dynamic, fast-growing environment, with the ownership and follow-through to build processes as well as execute within them.
  • Track record of owning workstreams independently and keeping senior stakeholders informed with concise, proactive updates.
  • Experience in a lean BD function, a matrixed organization, or a company headquartered outside the U.S. is a plus; Mandarin is a plus but not required.
  • Flexibility to collaborate across U.S. and Taiwan time zones, and 25% travel internationally for conferences, partner meetings, and site visits.
